"Sources from the 19th and early 20th centuries indicate that the angelshark was once abundant all around the coasts of Western Europe. [...] Angelshark numbers have declined precipitously across most of its range; it is now believed to be extinct in the North Sea and most of the northern Mediterranean, and has become extremely rare elsewhere.

Individual countries around the world have taken steps to protect sharks in the form of fishing regulations, shark finning bans, sale and trade bans, transport bans and shark sanctuaries where no (or limited) shark fishing is allowed. The Whitetip Reef Shark's scientific name is Triaenodon obesus. In the northern parts of its range the angel shark is seasonally migratory, and moves northwards during the summer (2).

There are also a few true shark species that can live in brackish waters and the Bull Shark can even leave the ocean and migrate several miles up in freshwater rivers and into lakes. In an historic move in 2002, the whale shark was included on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) (3). This shark measures approximately 157 cm long, for males, and 175 cm for females; in this species the female seems to be larger. Watch out, when you catch one, because this is a dangerous fish that will not hesitate to attack you or your boat. In terms of rigs a single hook clipped down behind an impact shield will be needed, as large baits will need to be cast a decent distance. Contrary to popular opinion, most sharks have excellent low light vision, thanks to a mirror located behind the retina.
