The vitality of the Harlem Renaissance served as a generative force for all New York--and the nation. Holyoke College in October 2007, Tim Wise, author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race From a Privileged Son offers a unique, inside-out view of race and racism in America. Also, a reminder, National History Day is underway. This shift—which makes the survival of the discipline contingent on non–African American students—means that “blackness can mean everything and, at the same time, nothing at all.”... The National Center for Education Statistics and a recent Harvard study report that students are more isolated by race and ethnicity in schools now than in the 1980s. 81 The change is relatively small and is largely explained by the increasing percentage of minority students in many school districts, but it shows that minority students have less opportunity to interact with white students in school and vice versa.
