Formerly comprehensive, but not updated since 1994. Moreover, the pantheistic system of his Ethics, with its identity of God and nature, cannot be said to be in harmony with Jewish beliefs. He was the author of Sefer ha-Shem and Yesod Mora, on the names of God and on the commandments, but his philosophic views are scattered throughout his biblical commentaries. Although the medieval thinkers employed philosophical method, their main aim was to demonstrate that the Jewish religion can be reconciled with the truth, as they saw it, of Greek philosophy. Time, he says, is something that everyone experiences and is intimately familiar with. The philosophical motto of this period could be described as "faith seeking understanding," since philosophy was viewed by the medieval church as the handmaiden of theology. Inductive reasoning makes conclusions or generalizations based on probabilistic reasoning. Once all this is done, I will not fail to bring the views of Aristotle and Plato together into a kind of harmony and show that they do not, as most people [think], disagree about everything but rather agree on most things, especially in philosophy. (Boethius [1880], pp. 79. 9–80.6 [my translation]) No doubt this plan would have proved unmanageable even if Boethius had not been executed in his mid-forties.
