T h e profitability of this system of farming will largely depend on the relative importance of livestock and of cash crops.

Hill cattle will usually belong to one of the following breeds : Galloway, Highland, and Welsh Black. They may be kept pure or they may be crossed with either the Shorthorn or with the Hereford. T h e system of management is generally to mate the cow in June or July so that she will calve in March or April. During the winter the cows will receive supplementary feed and many of them are wintered indoors in yards or in byres. T h e calves are born outdoors and run with their dams throughout the summer.
