The Discovery of France: A Historical Geography

"A witty, enticing narrative type. .. .[Robb's] technique is very engrossing. "—New York instances booklet overview, front-page review

A narrative of exploration—full of odd landscapes or even stranger inhabitants—that explains the iconic fascination of France. whereas Gustave Eiffel was once altering the skyline of Paris, huge elements of France have been nonetheless terra incognita. Even within the age of railways and newspapers, France used to be a land of historical tribal divisions, prehistoric communique networks, and pre-Christian ideals. French itself was once a minority language.

Graham Robb describes that unknown global in arresting narrative element. He recounts the epic trips of mapmakers, scientists, infantrymen, directors, and intrepid travelers, of itinerant employees, pilgrims, and herdsmen with their hundreds of thousands of migratory household animals. We find out how France was once explored, charted, and colonized, and the way the imperial impression of Paris was once progressively prolonged all through a state of remoted cities and villages.

The Discovery of France explains how the fashionable kingdom got here to be and the way poorly understood that kingdom nonetheless is this day. Above all, it exhibits how a lot of France—past and present—remains to be chanced on. a brand new York occasions outstanding e-book, Publishers Weekly top booklet, Slate most sensible ebook, and Booklist Editor's selection. sixteen pages of illustrations

M2 ) specifies an individual pass, and zk (k = 1, . . , m3 ) specifies an individual peak. 1 m1 = 1 (surrounding pit), m2 = 5, and m3 = 6. 2). It is easy to demonstrate, however, that not all graphs whose vertex sets are composed of the critical points and whose edge sets are composed of the critical lines can be regarded as abstract models of real topographic surfaces; they rather have to satisfy the properties listed below. 5 Throughout the remainder of this chapter, the terms surface network and weighted surface network will be used synonymously.

What is needed here is to trace ridge and course lines emanating from passes on the terrain surface. 2, the previous algorithm holds the corresponding four representative neighbours for each pass. Actually, these four representative neighbours serve as starting points for tracing such ridge and course lines in this algorithm, where the two upper neighbours lead to peaks (a peak) while two lower neighbours lead to pits (a pit). The surface network is then constructed by simply connecting every pass with the peaks and pits reachable from the pass through the ridge and course lines.

4. It is evident that, because of their definition, weighted surface networks are a purely topological data structure. However, for a number of applications like the generalisation of topographic surfaces or the characterisation of certain topographic features – such as river junctions, bifurcations of ridges, and crests leading from peaks to river junctions – the additional consideration of geometrical features is indispensable (Wolf, 1988a,b, 1989, 1990, 1991a). This consideration of geometrical properties can be easily achieved by embedding the weighted surface network into a metric space, that is, by associating (x, y) coordinates with the critical points and the critical lines.
